The Winner Is....

Dario Franchitti was the winner! Most people will remember him as the husband of Ashley Judd which kind of cracks me up.
The race began and then it was delayed due to rain. After they started back up, they raced for another 40 minutes and the rain began again and although the sum of laps did not occur it was an official race. Franchitti got to do all the traditions like the victory lap, kissing the yard of bricks, and drinking the carafe of milk.

A Baby Gift

To the left is a pic of the quilt square that I made for Dawn, a friend of mine in the midwest. It is mirrored so it actually says, "CSU".
Another friend, Felicity, wrote to 10 of Dawn's friends to see if we were interested in putting together a square of a fond memory that we have of Dawn.
My memory is living with Dawn at CSU, going to coffee, talking about her boyfriend (now husband), going to the cafeteria together each day, and taking classes. It was such a fun summer with her.
Today, Felicity gave the quilt to Dawn for her soon to be born baby, MacKenzie. She loved it and it was so fun to be a part of this gift for her.

Tribute to the Indy 500

Although I'm not an avid car racing fan, the one race I do pay attention to is the Indy 500. Growing up, the race was a staple of our Memorial Day weekend. My parents have fond memories of the race and passed them down to us. I remember going to the race at least twice as a family and the time trials many more times. (Personally the time trials were more interesting)

Last year as I traveled home on Memorial Day weekend for my brother's med school graduation, I sat by 4 gentlemen who were going to Indy for the big race. I was shocked by how excited they were. I always thought it was an Indiana thing; however, they were quick to tell me it is the BEST car race in the world. They have been almost every year and couldn't believe that I was traveling to Indiana for any other reason than the race.

Road Rage?

Road rage was the topic of conversation on the news today and yesterday. Apparently Miami, Florida tops the list as having the most road rage. After living in Florida for awhile, I don't doubt it. You never knew what you were going to get on the road each day.

Shockingly, Portland was the city listed as the least road rage exhibited. As I thought about, I realized that since moving here, I rarely hear car horns honking, people let cars merge into their lane pretty easily, and I am waved on more readily than in any other place I've lived with the exception of Indiana.

BUT you know, I still have had the rare occasion where someone yells at you (though you can't hear them) or they give you the birdie to let you know you have displeased them. So Portland still has road rage but it is definitely less.

This is my friend, Krista. Most of my good pictures come from her 'cause she is a great photographer.
Anyway, I was at soccer games again with Krista watching A. and Z. play away. Z. got a goal and A. is really good at defense (though I'm not always convinced she knows what she is doing).
I also went to a wedding shower in the afternoon. Soccer games, showers, eating dinner with friends... refreshing.

At the beach....

Astoria, OR : One of the new sites of Oregon that I saw on our RD retreat. We drove in on a perfect day and could see the bridge over the Columbia. It is a pretty amazing sight.

We had dinner at the Wet Dog Cafe. My hamburger was huge and I could barely walk after eating it. We had a great view of the river and mountains in the background.

Other highlights: Playing Worst Case Scenario together. I think I'd want to be with Cas or Steve if I was in trouble.

Picking up sand dollars -- learning you need to boil them, and walking the beach.

Soccer and new friends

Saturday I went to see two soccer games. The Mikalatos' two small fry are learning to play soccer and I wanted to see them run around and kick the ball. It was great entertainment, but the best part was seeing them get excited that their friend came to see them play. Priceless.

Sunday, I had fun getting to know 2 new friends from church. I met Esther on Thursday and she invited me to dinner and got to meet her husband too. Esther and I immediately liked each other 'cause we are both from a family of 7 kids.

This week, our RD team has a retreat. Not a true retreat where you don't work but at least it is at the beach and a different scene than the office.

Spidey

Tonight, going to see Spiderman 3 with some friends. The movies are entertaining but I must confess that I will always prefer the cartoon. I watched it everyday at noon when I was in kindergarten.

The best part of the cartoon... is the theme song. The lyrics are below... you know you want to sing along!

Spiderman

Spiderman, Spiderman,
Does whatever a spider can
Spins a web, any size,
Catches thieves just like flies
Look Out! Here comes the Spiderman.

Is he strong? Listen bud,
He's got radioactive blood.
Can he swing from a thread
Take a look overhead
Hey, there There goes the Spiderman.

In the chill of night
At the scene of a crime
Like a streak of light
He arrives just in time.

Spiderman, Spiderman
Friendly neighborhood Spiderman
Wealth and fame
He's ignored
Action is his reward.

To him, life is a great big bang up
Whenever there's a hang up You'll find the Spider man.
